Chronic Low Back Pain Negatively Affects Balance

Persistent low back pain can have significant impact on someone’s quality of life, but a study quantified just how chronic back pain can also impact a person’s balance. The research showed that people that suffer from prolonged low back pain have reduced lumbar proprioception, increased postural sway, and depressed postural control. These measurements all strongly correlate to a person’s balance and their potential fall risk.

The good news with this study is understanding the reverse is true as well! If you suffer from chronic back pain and are struggling with fear of falling, then treating your back pain can have a significant positive impact on your fall risk.
